87 imagesAravaipa Canyon is a true oasis in the Sonoran Desert, located in the Galiuro Mountains of southern Arizona. This riparian area, with its spring-fed, perennially flowing creek, provides a habitat for numerous species of fauna and flora that would otherwise not survive the harsh desert climate. Numerous side canyons with ephemeral creeks and runoffs offer distinct biomes, each with its own microclimate and distinctive geologic features. This wilderness area is protected by the Bureau of Land Management which limits the number of daily visitors to maintain the integrity of the canyon as well as the quiet enjoyment of those who venture in.

61 imagesArizona likely does not come immediately to mind when one thinks of autumn color, but it really should. Although better known for the desert and Grand Canyon, our state experiences phenomenal fall foliage all across its territory, beginning in late September and lasting until early January. It takes a bit of effort to visit the areas graced by autumn's rich bounty, but it's well worth it. With all this color extending for over three months, there's good reason that some call it Arizona's Endless Autumn!

83 imagesHavasu Canyon is the ancestral home of the Havasupai, the people of the blue-green water. Having inhabited the canyon and surrounding land for centuries before the arrival of Europeans on the continent, the Havasupai struggle to maintain their native culture and preserve their way of life. Fortunately, outsiders are welcome to visit this spectacularly beautiful canyon as guest of the tribe through an annual permit system. Though difficult to obtain, these permits are well worth the effort, as a visit to Havasupai is incredibly special and challenging to describe in words. Although photographs pale compared to seeing the place in person, I hope the images in this gallery, made over four separate visits during late autumn between 2012 and 2024, offer a small sense of this magical place.

27 imagesOrgan Pipe Cactus National Monument is a small park in southwestern Arizona, right along the international border with Mexico. It is the only place in the United States where the namesake organ pipe cactus, Stenocereus thurberi, grows natively. With opportunities to hike, camp, or simply take a scenic drive, the park is worth a visit.

145 imagesSoutheastern Arizona, including the areas around Tucson, encompasses a region known as the Madrean Sky Islands. A series of mountain ranges and intervening valleys extend across the region. Isolated from one another by only several miles, these mountain "islands" have developed unique ecosystems, with flora and fauna not found in neighboring ranges. The geographical and biological diversity makes this region an absolute delight to visit and explore. This gallery presents images of southern Arizona and the Madrean sky islands, including the Santa Catalina, Huachuca, Chiricahua, Santa Rita, and Rincon Mountains.

41 imagesWildflowers are a fickle thing in Arizona. Largely dependent upon the amount of rain that falls in the autumn and winter, blooms vary dramatically from year to year. The cacti, however, fully adapted to the typically arid climate, put on a great show annually.
